The He(art) of Oxford Empty Bowls

The entire Empty Bowls movement has its roots in the blending of art and service, and we strive to incorporate service learning through the arts into each Oxford Empty Bowls event.  This not only connects us to the intent of that very first luncheon, when Michigan art teacher John Hartom worked with his high school-aged students to make ceramic bowls and host a soup luncheon in support of a local food drive, but it allows us to engage artists of all ages and introduce the ideas of civic and social responsibility into art and art education.

Throughout its history, Oxford Empty Bowls has engaged artists from:

  • Kramer Elementary School
  • McGuffey Montessori School
  • Miami University's Department of Art
  • Miami University's Opening Minds through Art
  • Miami University's Saturday Art
  • Ohio Valley Woodturners Guild
  • Oxford Community Art Center's After School Art
  • Oxford Community Art Center's "Perseverance With Dignity" Exhibition
  • Ridgeway Elementary School
  • Talawanda High School

And, Home Is Where the He(art) Is

It goes without saying that none of what we do could happen without the support of the Oxford Community Arts Center, Oxford Empty Bowls’ home since 2014, when we outgrew our previous location at the Oxford United Methodist Church.  Under the leadership of Heidi Schiller, Donna Stevens, and the OCAC Board of Directors, and with the tireless support of their amazing staff, Oxford Empty Bowls was graciously welcomed into their beautiful and historic building, and they have provided us with an incredible level of commitment and support ever since.
